It's a bedtime tradition that began with Little Nutbrown Hare, and each night we try to outdo the last...I love you to the moon and back...to the beach and back...to the mountians...and one of my favorites, "to Jesus and the angels" and back...We never imagined we would be saying, I love you to Africa and back...it seems like the furthest imaginable place, but yet in God's perfect timing, we plan to go.... to Africa and back!!! And when we get back, we will have another little cheek to kiss goodnight...please keep us in your prayers and enjoy this journey with us!

Why Congo?

The more we learned about Democratic Republic of Congo/DRC  (formerly Zaire) the more we thought, why not Congo?

There are an estimated 147,000,000 orphans in the world, 5.5 million of these are in the Congo, a country slightly less than one-fourth the size of the US

Kinshasa, the capital city, has 10 million residents, it is estimated that 1 million are orphaned children

Despite holding up to 30% of the world's diamond reserves, DRC is one of the poorest countries in the world, with an unemployment rate of 80%, and malnutrition affecting 2/3rds of the population.

DRC has experienced civil war since 1998. It is estimated that 5.4 million people have died as a result since the war began. Children account for 47% of these deaths.

44% of the population are 0-14 years old, with the median age of the population being 17 years old

Infant mortality rate: 77 deaths/1,000 live births vs US 6 deaths/1,000 live births

Average life expectancy: 56 years

28% of children under the age of 5 are underweight

1 in 5 children die before the age of 5

We want to make a difference for even one...
